Owned by the City of Saskatoon, the Shaw Centre is home to an international-level Myrtha competitive pool, a dive tower, a leisure pool area with water slide, fitness facilities, a running track, meeting rooms, and office spaces. This new state-of the-art recreational facility joins the Tommy Douglas Collegiate and Bethlehem Catholic High School to form the Blairmore Integrated Facility.
The project included an excavation that varied in depth from three meters at the warm-up pool to six meters at the deep end of the competitive pool. Over 120 interlocking cast-in-place concrete piles act as the shoring system at that location. With all the competitive accessories, including two moveable bulkheads, the championship pool is configured for fast swimming, dive training, and competition. This means the Shaw Centre is capable of hosting provincial, national, and international aquatic competitions when not meeting the athletic needs of the local community.
What started as part of the City's vision to create a destination center built on partnerships and community values transformed into a state-of-the-art facility offering a new standard of recreation, health, and fitness opportunities to the citizens of Saskatoon. Thanks to the direct employment of hundreds of skilled tradesmen, PCL sees this center as a shining example of how effective a diverse group can be when teamwork is prioritized throughout a complex and aggressive project.
