Sheridan Street Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation (Design-Build)

Project Overview

This hydraulically operated bascule bridge spanning the Intracoastal Waterway serves as a critical access route to the city of Hollywood, Florida. Our client successfully employed the design-build delivery model on this restoration project to enhance innovation, reduce design and construction time, and minimize changes. PCL collaborated with the design engineer to successfully perform the majority of the steel, concrete, painting, and hydraulic repairs during a 21-day bridge closure, and the team completed both design and construction in less than five months.

PCL won the project based on its high technical proposal score and the use of two innovative techniques: use of a wire saw to remove counterweight sections and minimize steel corrosion, and replacement of existing hydraulic cylinders to save money.

The client’s high level of satisfaction with the project resulted in their using the design-build delivery method in several other bascule bridge projects.
