Southcentre Renovation and Addition 2007 - 2010

Project Overview

During an aggressive twenty-seven-month schedule, PCL transformed one of Calgary’s premier shopping destinations, Southcentre Mall, into a “comfort” shopping experience. The team built an 86,111-square-foot addition, relocated the existing food court, added new entrances, brought the interior finishes up to hotel standards, and reconfigured old spaces to accommodate new tenants. Through the use of natural light, innovative artificial lighting, and elegant finishes, PCL helped to create an ambiance that attracts upscale retail chains not normally seen in Canada.

Working closely with the client and design teams, PCL was able to influence the design and control both budget and schedule, all to the satisfaction of landlord and tenants. The original schedule was reduced by six months through rephasing of work, and preconstruction services from concept through to completion resulted in improvements to the overall design.

PCL completed the entire project without a single recordable incident, despite scheduling both day and night shifts in a fully operational mall.
