This 160,000-square-foot facility is located on the 34-hectare grounds of the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital in Ontario. The client called on PCL to renovate an existing building into a forensic treatment unit with 44 beds, and to construct a new secure treatment unit with 100 new beds. The unique architectural components included large unbreakable windows, vinyl floors, and numerous treatment areas.
As an institution for the treatment of medium- and maximum-security, mentally-ill inmates, the facility included hospital-type amenities with medium- and maximum-security requirements. This type of work required everyone onsite to have specific security clearances. PCL worked closely with the client and consultants to create a seamless process for security clearance that ensured the schedule stayed on track. Working on the grounds of operational facility, PCL also worked closely with the client to incorporate key hospital requirements into the PCL site safety orientation plan.
