Tacoma Narrows Bridge – Replace Maintenance Traveler

Project Overview

The Washington State Department of Transportation relies heavily on the maintenance traveler along the 5,000-foot-long Tacoma Narrows Bridge to perform maintenance on the decades-old iconic structure. After the traveler’s upper rails were recalled by the manufacturer, PCL jumped in to replace the aging upper traveler, rail expansion joints at the East and West towers, and the upper maintenance traveler access platform.

A remote-controlled tractor drive system was used to safely transport more than 10,000 feet of linear rail. PCL bundled the replacements into one construction contract to make the most efficient use of the Department’s design and construction budget.
