Tempe Town Lake Downstream Dam Replacement

Project Overview

The Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona, uses four inflatable rubber bladders as its dam structure. To ensure the safety of the dam, The City of Tempe contracted with PCL as Construction Manager at Risk to remove and replace the existing Bridgestone rubber dam bladders and install a new dam sprinkler system to cool the rubber bladders during the extremely hot summer months.

During PCL’s mobilization and prior to starting the work, one of the bladders ruptured and completely drained the lake of approximately 750 million gallons of water. As a result of this emergency, PCL was tasked with replacing the four bladders as originally contracted, but in half the time. The project team rose to the challenge, proudly delivering on the new schedule so the City could hold their annual Ironman competition at the Town Lake.
