The StubHub Center (formerly The Home Depot Center) is a multisport complex and an official US Olympic training site on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills. It is home to two major-league soccer teams, and to the United States Soccer Federation national headquarters and training site. Highlights of the project included a 27,000-seat soccer stadium; 8,000-seat tennis stadium; five grass and one synthetic turf soccer fields; 19 tournament and training tennis courts; a 2,500-seat indoor velodrome; track and field facilities; softball and baseball fields; running trails; and ample parking. PCL’s scope of work also included the build-out of team offices at the front of the stadium, and extensive site landscaping.
The StubHub Center presented many constructability issues that the PCL team was able to successfully resolve. One example was PCL’s approach to the construction of athletic turf fields. In trying to choose the best-performing athletic turf while meeting budget goals, the client was gridlocked with conflicting recommendations from different expert consultants. PCL established a testing and evaluation program for the alternative soil materials and drainage systems that included input from the various expert interests. The result is that PCL was able to utilize existing onsite soils for portions of the base structure, generate custom solutions for fields with different usage patterns, and return a substantial six-figure savings to the client.
