The RISE

Project Overview

The RISE is a showcase of urban living serving the needs of both retail and residential users. This 605,000-square-foot building, encompassing an entire city block, is home to three major retail tenants, 92 residential units, and a 700-stall parkade. It also features a 20,000-square-foot green roof and community garden.

PCL self-performed the 1.2-million-contact-square-foot structure, placing 46,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete. The location offered many challenges during construction. First, it was located at a busy intersection with bridge access to downtown Vancouver. The City of Vancouver required that the bike lane remain open at all times, which required extensive preplanning. Second, construction of the Canada Line (a rapid transit line for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics Games) was underway only a few feet from the project site. The PCL team had to take special care in working around cut-and-cover tunnel work, phasing delivering and staging locations.

In 2009, the RISE was one of only five projects chosen by the Urban Land Institute for a Global Award for Excellence. Also in 2009, it received four other prestigious real estate awards.
