The University of Winnipeg United Health and RecPlex is a state-of-the-art recreation and wellness facility that is pursuing LEED Gold certification. The University has signed a unique community charter that ensures one third of the new facility’s use is dedicated to the inner city neighborhood residents. Amateur- and University-level sport will receive an additional one-third use of the facility. The project features a large multiuse artificial turf field, a four-lane rubberized sprint track and jump pit, retractable batting cages, multipurpose room, community gym with climbing wall, and an underground parkade for 190 vehicles and 56 bicycles.
PCL partnered with both the University of Winnipeg and the design team led by Number TEN Architectural Group. The PCL team helped steer the design both to achieve the client’s budget and to ensure delivery of a facility that optimized value for that budget and met all of the client’s needs. A number of innovations were required to meet these objectives. One example was the measures taken to eliminate all excavation shoring on a very tight downtown site. This provided savings of almost $2 million, and did not cost the owner any program from their project. PCL also worked with the team to deliver the project two weeks ahead of schedule, despite working through one of the coldest Winnipeg winters on record.
