Trans-Canada Highway Bowfort Road Interchange

Project Overview

This City of Calgary interchange is a major commercial highway junction of the Trans-Canada Highway and Bowfort Road servicing Canada Olympic Park and Bowfort Road businesses. Acting as a popular muster point for travelers heading west to the mountains, the reconstructed six-lane cross section for the Trans-Canada Highway provides an easier commute for the estimated 60,000 vehicles traveling through each day. The project also includes a new bridge structure on Bowfort Road to accommodate dual left turns in all directions, with two through lanes each way, two roundabouts with new roadways, and a storm water management pond.

Though challenges were experienced throughout the course of construction, including unsuitable ground conditions, unseasonal summer weather, land acquisition delays, and numerous sequencing issues, such impacts were mitigated through significant collaboration between PCL, the City of Calgary, Stantec, and key trade contractors. At the official grand opening on August 31, 2017, the City of Calgary’s mayor was pleased to announce the project’s successful delivery as being on time and under budget.

Most importantly, the project team was able to maintain an excellent safety record with a total recordable incident rate of zero, and to deliver a high-quality product to the client.
