Project Overview

This steam-assisted gravity drainage heavy oil plant is estimated to have a 35-year project life and a peak production of more than 30,000 bitumen barrels per day. Located 40 kilometers (25 mi.) northwest of Cold Lake, Alberta, this plant facilitates the transportation of diluted bitumen to the client’s heavy oil upgrader in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.

PCL Energy Inc. (formerly Monad Industrial Constructors Inc.) supplied labor, supervision, construction equipment, and materials on this project. Their involvement facilitated the supply and installation of concrete foundations and slabs, the setting of pipe rack and equipment modules, the setting of equipment and vessels, the installation of miscellaneous structural steel, mechanical completion and installation, and the testing of piping systems. Working as a subcontractor to PCL Industrial Management Inc., the PCL Energy team brought extensive, cost-saving value to the client.

The execution of the project was considered a resounding success on all fronts: Health, Safety, and Environmental performance was excellent; the project was finished on time; and there were minimal changes during the execution of the work.
