Project Overview

Otterson Hall, on the campus of the University of California, San Diego, is home to the Rady School of Management. This 63,000-square-foot, four-story facility features auditorium-style classrooms, flexible classroom/meeting space, numerous conference rooms, and faculty offices. The complex exterior structure is formed with many angles and faceted surfaces, and features a variety of exterior cladding systems, including a composite phenolic panel rainscreen, lightweight composite natural stone cladding, smooth finished plaster, and window wall systems. Knowing that the exterior structure was an important focal point, the PCL team used an extensive mock-up system to ensure that the many exterior finishes would come together in a seamless manner to provide a quality fit and finish along with the desired aesthetic.

Going beyond this project’s lump-sum, hard-bid contract, the PCL team actively found ways to add value through innovative ideas: certain activities were deferred until school break periods to minimize disruptions, and several voluntary value-engineering suggestions saved the client time and money.
