This Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) P2 Build Finance project consists of the construction of a new four-story structure to house the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) Cardiac Life Support Services, followed by the phased interior renovation of the existing building. The new construction is complicated by its location on the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, surrounded by existing structures (the existing Heart Institute clinical building and a critical-care wing in the Ottawa Hospital), which remain operational throughout construction.
The addition is 131,607 square feet and includes three floors of clinical and outpatient services, with associated service levels. Functional spaces include eight laboratories, five operating rooms, 27 intensive-care-unit beds, staff spaces, and a mechanical penthouse.
The renovation of 53,933 square feet of the existing Heart Institute Life Support level consolidates cardiac imaging and improves outpatient services. The existing UOHI lobby is expanded to improve circulation and wayfinding. The project also includes significant site upgrades, including chiller, electrical service, ambulance entrance reconfiguration, linkages to the existing buildings, new elevators, and a new loading dock.
