The addition of a 186-meter (282-ft.) extension to the Winnipeg Weather-Protected Walkway system allows pedestrians to stroll between the corner of Portage and Main and the Convention Centre without taking a step outside, especially valuable during the frigid winter months. This new link allows the Winnipeg Convention Centre a direct -oute to many downtown buildings, including the MTS Centre, the Richardson Building, the Commodity Exchange Building, hotels, and many office and retail spaces. The walkway is constructed of steel trusses, supported by architecturally finished, exposed concrete piers on caissons. An elevator was installed to accommodate pedestrians with heavy loads or wheelchairs, and the exterior curtain wall finish creates a bright, inviting, and safe walkway.
The Weather Protected Walkway Extension project presented some challenges, such as being located on one of the busiest street corners in downtown Winnipeg. The project team had to take care not to disrupt downtown traffic flow during the busy rush hour. In addition, PCL’s extensive experience in constructing elevated and underground walkway systems in Winnipeg was very useful when it came to working around multiple service lines running directly under the project site.
