The Whitehorse General Hospital Expansion is a design-build, 43,000-square-foot addition to the existing facility, which PCL completed in 1997. It will provide a new emergency department and a second-level shell space for future fit-out. Also, as part of the expansion scope, a new design-build, 5,200-square-foot emergency medical services (EMS) facility was constructed to replace the current one located within the new hospital expansion footprint.
PCL mobilized on-site in July 2015. Construction is scheduled over three phases. The EMS building was completed in February 2016 and the new addition is scheduled for completion in September 2017.
A major construction innovation for the new addition is the off-site construction of modules, with the mechanical and electrical systems preinstalled. This unique solution will allow the PCL team to improve efficiency, quality, and safety by building in a controlled fabrication facility environment, and will as well allow for rapid installation, thereby reducing the construction duration.
