Project Description
This new 10-storey, 472-bed hospital, designed especially for patients with complex chronic diseases, will replace the existing aging hospital on the site. As part of the project scope, the historic Don Jail which was built in the 1860s will be preserved and integrated into the function of the hospital as administrative offices. The main entrance of the jail will be publicly accessible, the Rotunda will be restored to its original beauty, and some cells and the gallows will be preserved for historic purposes. The project will provide two levels of parking, a loading level and a concourse level below grade with 10 floors of rehabilitation and patient care space. The total new hospital area is approximately 731,000 s.f. with the Don Jail renovation/restoration adding another 83,400 s.f. Upon completion, the existing Bridgepoint Hospital and the more recently built Toronto Jail will be demolished and the land converted into park space and future development sites. Design enhancements have been incorporated into the facility including a 10th level terrace with a green roof system and extensive centre court landscaping for increased patient wellness. The project has been designed with environmentally responsible and sustainable features and will be certified under the LEED® Green Building Rating System. This project is being delivered under the Government of Ontario's Infrastructure Ontario Alternate Financing Program (AFP). PCL partnered with Plenary Group/Innisfree and Johnson Controls to deliver this design-build/finance/maintain project.
