BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North

New 2-storey Cancer Clinic with 1 level of underground parking and a link to the existing University Hospital of Northern B.C. (UHNBC) plus a separate 3 1/2 storey cast-in-place parkade with underground link to Cancer Clinic.  The Cancer Clinic is being developed on the existing (UHNBC) property and its departments include: Radiation Therapy (with 2 linear accelerator vaults and 1 CT simulator suite), Systemic Treatment/Pharmacy, General Clinics, Rehabilitation, Health Information, Clinical Trials, Population Oncology and Administration Offices. 

This project is being carried out under the P3 model.  As part of the Province's commitment to environmental sustainability, the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North will be designed and built to achieve Leadership in Energy and Enviromental Design (LEED) Gold certification, helping to create a healthy and healing environment for patients and health-care professionals.  One of the key design features will be a green, ‘living' roof — the first of its kind in Prince George.

The use of wood has been incorporated throughout the cancer centre where practical and appropriate and according to the BC Building Code standards. Wood will be showcased in both the interior and the exterior of the building in structural, acoustic, decorative, millwork, doors and exterior cladding elements. The wood acoustic panels throughout the interior of the centre are meant to echo the wood finishes in the atrium of the University Hospital of Northern BC.

Specific emphasis has also been placed in the design for incorporating features that address the First Nations vernacular, such as large waiting areas, a medicinal healing garden, rooftop patio area for patients and their families and providing opportunities for the display of First Nations artwork.
