Design-Build

DESIGN-BUILD contracts deliver comprehensive design, procurement and construction services, within a cooperative working environment.

Design-build is a method of project delivery where a single entity–the design-builder–is contractually responsible for design and construction, giving the owner a single point of responsibility. It is selected most often by clients who wish to establish a lump sum cost commitment and shorten the project duration. However, there are other important benefits over the traditional design-bid-build process, including improved communication, the facilitation of innovative construction practices, and a reduction in design, construction and owner administrative costs. Also, it virtually eliminates change orders, with the exception of owner introduced items.

Below, our clients and other construction partners talk about their design-build experiences with the PCL family of companies:

In a difficult emergency situation in October of 1999, FDOT shortlisted three design-build teams to submit proposals for this fast track project. PCL's contractor-initiated design and innovative construction methods saved the owner $6 million dollars from the second bidder. The project won the 2001 National Design Build Award from the Design Build Institute of America.

PCL recently completed construction of a high level design-build bridge over the St. John's River just north of Orlando, Florida. Many alternatives were considered during the proposal stage of the project. PCL is building the most cost-effective solution for this project. The Florida Bulb Tee superstructure is founded on concrete piling with cast-in-place footings, columns and caps.
