SAFETY at PCL is all about knowing it, believing it, and living it. It’s about safety being an instilled value in everything we do: be it at work or at home.  In the end, our steadfast belief in safety is moving us closer and closer to our overall organizational goal of ZERO INCIDENTS.

This is why the PCL family of companies as a whole continues to be a North American construction leader with a total recordable incident and lost time frequency rates amongst the best in the industry.

Still Safe in Busy Times

Despite more than 20,000,000 work hours recorded in fiscal 2009, the PCL family of companies’ overall total recordable incident rate (TRIR) and our overall lost-time frequency rate (LTFR) are amongst the best in the industry.

Adding More Safety Professionals

To continue to instill safety as a value at PCL and solidify safety as part of our organization’s Operational Excellence program, we continue to add more safety professionals to our operating companies. We now have more than 150 safety professionals working in the PCL family. It is important to note that these safety professionals (and other PCL professionals who impact safety) receive financial incentives for instilling safety as a value on jobsites, resulting in demonstrable safety records.

Internal Safety Audits

In addition to our everyday safety programs and practices, every PCL operating company undergoes a thorough safety audit annually.

These audit scores are tabulated for any remediation required and the PCL operation receiving the highest score is honored with the prestigious Bob Tarr Safety Award. This award is presented each November to the PCL operation that achieves the highest combined score based on the weighted categories of accident frequency, accident severity, inspections, audits, and criteria established by the PCL Executive Review Committee.
