Originally built in the 1960s, South Cross Bayou’s Water Reclamation Facility in St. Petersburg, Florida, was in need of upgrades to reduce the level of toxins discharged from the facility. PCL’s Water Infrastructure Group completed three rounds of improvements and upgrades, beginning with modifying the facility’s automatic backwash filter basins. The basins were replaced by four vertical ultraviolet disinfection channels and an effluent pump station.
Additional improvements included upgrades to the facility’s aeration blowers, from two 800-HP blowers to three 400-HP turbo blower systems. The 4160-volt power distribution system that feeds the blower building was replaced with a 480-volt distribution system. The existing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system was modified to integrate the new blower and monitoring systems into the existing plant.
The project also included replacement of two equalization tank blowers.
