This fast-track, design-build project converted existing University of California, Irvine ground-floor engineering classrooms into a state-of-the-art, transmission electron microscope (TEM) facility for materials characterization. The 6,500-square-foot facility comprises four unique imaging suites, a sample prep lab, and a focused ion beam suite. Each imaging suite has a separate control room, equipment room, and instrument room that isolates operator movements and ancillary equipment noise and vibration from the microscope. The TEM facility successfully supports the highest-performance transmission electron microscopes available today, offering researchers a powerful tool for looking at the structure of matter and revealing the functional properties of materials.
PCL relied on the Last Planner System to develop and maintain design and construction schedules. Incorporating all key consultants and trades in early pull planning sessions, the project team was able to highlight key predecessors and successors, durations, and prerequisites for phased turnovers. The project team met or exceeded all required schedule milestones, early turnover, phase two and phase three, while meeting the project budget.
