Job Site Insights™, (JSI™), PCL’s in-house developed
cloud-based smart construction platform saves project costs while reducing
environmental impact. Read the three ways this technology is reducing energy
consumption and carbon use during construction.
You can’t have smart cities
without smart buildings, and you can’t have smart buildings without smart construction.
With JSI™, powerful Internet
of Things sensors are installed on the construction site for the life span of
the project. The data collected is streamed 24/7 to the JSI cloud platform,
providing construction staff, clients, and owners with real-time actionable
insights for the project. This data-driven approach enhances
productivity and saves labor costs by enabling people to focus on more
effective and efficient tasks that drive value back to clients.
2. ENERGY AND
the SKY Residences project in downtown Edmonton, Alberta, one of the first PCL
projects to be equipped with JSI™ sensors, the platform enabled the team to adjust the
typical 24-hour heater usage (a standard in construction during cold winter
months) and turn heaters off for parts of the day. This reduced natural gas
heater usage by 46 percent and reduced electrical heater usage by 58 percent –
that’s the equivalent energy of nearly half a million liters of gasoline and 43
homes’ electricity usage for one year. The project saved approximately $250,000
in energy costs.
have shown construction rework comprises 7 to 11 percent of the total
construction cost on a project. This waste is not only material, but also of
labor and embodied energy of the materials. On the SKY Residences project, JSI™ helped the team monitor
temperature and humidity conditions in real time and respond quickly to any
problems or fluctuations. Remarkably, the project had no freeze-thaw leak
incidents, which is virtually unheard of in winter construction. In addition,
the repair rate for the premium hardwood flooring in each suite was reduced by
85%. A significant amount of waste and almost
$172,000 in rework was avoided – all thanks to smart construction and Job Site
