With just over 3,000 residents and no traffic lights, Lanai is the smallest of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, this 140-square-mile island is 98 percent privately owned by Larry Ellison, founder and former CEO of Oracle. Building on the island requires knowledge and expertise in coordination to minimize disruptions in an intimate community. When Manele Bay, one of two luxury Four Seasons Resorts on the island of Lanai, required a facelift to update the resort, PCL was brought in to bring the client’s vision to life.
The Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay Enhancement project was focused on a series of upgrades to the property to provide an improved vacation experience for guests of the resort. PCL performed work to renovate all public spaces, including the following:
- Making architectural improvements to the ONE FORTY restaurant and three-story lobby
- Converting of butler suites into spa treatment rooms
- Improving the front desk and public restrooms
- Completing code-required upgrades to the fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems and a kitchen grease interceptor
- Replacing existing amenities with two pools, multiple spas, cabanas an another restaurant and bar
It takes more than that to create a truly luxurious resort. Given that the exterior had to reflect the interior in a luxury resort such as this, PCL helped construct landscaping to create the experience of being in a lush, intimate garden where guests could just kick back, relax and immerse themselves in the space.
Due to the remote location of the project, detailed logistics were designed before work began. This meant determining how and when materials and workers could be delivered to the island — and where to keep them once they arrived. These logistical challenges were overcome by careful planning, the manpower needed was brought in and housed on the island, and equipment and materials were carefully coordinated and barged weekly to Lanai.
The hotel was closed to guests during construction, allowing the project team full access to complete simultaneous projects. Project team members were housed in a sister hotel nearby, making it efficient for workers to get to the site. Through consistent project team communication and up-to-the-minute coordination, the renovations at the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay were completed in seven months. PCL was proud to have worked with a great team on delivering a successful project in the community — one that will enhance the experience of both our clients and their guests for years to come.
