The Hawaii State Federal Credit Union (Hawaii State FCU) Headquarters renovation consolidated 240 employees from multiple locations into a single, modernized space in downtown Honolulu. The new headquarters is in a 10-story building originally constructed in 1959 and stands as a testament to Honolulu’s post-World War II rise as a financial hub in the Pacific region.

The Nordic PCL team renovated 70,000 square feet of space, including a 4,300 square foot two-story branch on the ground floor, eight floors of offices, conference rooms, multiple event spaces, a 1,200-square-foot kitchen, private mother’s rooms, a gym, and a rooftop deck and lounge.

This project aimed to create a welcoming and healthy working environment for employees. The Nordic PCL team installed a new HVAC system with state-of-the-art filtration and disinfection technology. The team also replaced the exterior glazing on the windows to allow for more natural light while maintaining a low solar heat gain coefficient. The low solar heat gain of the new glazing contributes to energy conservation by reducing the need for artificial temperature control. Biophilic elements are present on every floor, providing a connection to the outdoors in the workplace.

Additional employee-focused amenities include a variety of flexible workspaces and restorative spaces including focus rooms, coffee lounges and wellness rooms. The top floor offers large event and collaboration spaces, a full-service kitchen, a lounge area and an open deck with 360-degree views of Honolulu. This commitment to cultivating inviting environments extends to the ground floor public bank branch which features ample seating areas, a coffee shop and a grand entrance that beckons visitors.

Extensive structural upgrades were also required to ensure the safety of the revamped space, particularly in the double-height lobby entry. Extensive measures, including abatement, demolition, and meticulous coordination of structural upgrades, were essential to accommodate the building's spacious interior. The Nordic PCL team conducted a thorough scanning of the concrete structure and installed structural reinforcements throughout the building.
