The world-class winery includes several buildings centered around a large granite deposit and will truly be a unique piece of architecture. Once complete, the vineyard will boast more than 150,000 square feet of building space, including a restaurant, administration offices, private tasting rooms, theater and events center, outdoor amphitheater, grand lobby, retail and outdoor bar. The granite deposits were carved out making room for tunnels and caves that run underground and loop to connect the various buildings serving as the wine cellar. Natural rock was also excavated, blasted and sawcut, and will be used as natural masonry throughout the building along with dry-stacked stone walls. Incorporating the natural rock into the design greatly reduces the need for construction materials and the caves provide natural temperature and humidity stabilization for cellaring the wine.
Technology and innovation have played a huge role in the vineyard project thus far. Prior to mobilizing on-site, the team needed to understand the layout of nearly 400 meters of underground tunnels and wine caves. PCL’s team of construction experts have been instrumental in promoting digital collaboration between all stakeholders through the use of Revizto. Revizto allows the team to combine and view several Revit models alongside point clouds captured by laser scanning the natural rock. The model allows those involved to fly-through and visualize the space along with request changes prior to beginning construction, while avoiding rework and unnecessary costs. Additional technology being used is the use of 3D modeling and Bluebeam’s Revu Set tool to automate tracking of drawing revisions and coordinating MEP to ensure the clean look met the owner’s expectations.
When the O’Rourke Family Vineyards is complete, it will truly be a one-of-a-kind vineyard destination with its wine caves offering a unique tasting experience.
