Calgary, AB (April 30, 2019) – The PCL family of companies is honored to receive its first-ever International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Petal Certification for the Calgary Zoo’s Panda Passage.
The Petal Certification, from the ILFI Living Building Challenge, makes it the most advanced constructed habitat in the world. The Panda Passage is the first-ever Petal certified project for PCL and the first in Alberta; it is also the second zoo facility to receive the certification. Focused on innovation and sustainability, the Living Building Challenge provides guidelines for design and construction that promote the relationship between people and the environment.
“Working with such specific and innovative parameters was a challenge we were up for, and one we were excited to execute for the Calgary Zoo because of its commitment to conservation,” said PCL’s Calgary district vice president, Blaine Maciborsky. “Like the Calgary Zoo, PCL prides itself on its commitment to sustainability, and by using sustainable construction methods we can build vibrant, lasting legacies for our communities.”
Based on the ILFI and the Living Building Challenge’s commitment to sustainable construction, the Petal Certification requires contractors to meet all criteria for at least three of the seven petal categories, including place, water, energy, health and happiness, materials, equity and beauty. The Panda Passage met four of the prerequisite petals to receive its certification in the beauty, materials, health and happiness, and equity categories.
“I am honored PCL played a role in the Calgary Zoo receiving this prestigious sustainability certification,” said Maciborsky. “I am proud of the project team for their dedication and commitment to this thorough process and continuing our ongoing relationship with the Zoo.”
Beginning in October 2016, the Panda Passage project included the renovation of an existing building and a new back of house area, creating a home for four pandas as a part of the Chinese Panda program. The Panda Passage project was successfully completed in May 2018 by PCL’s Special Projects Division.
