$1.4 billion Cancer Centre will now undergo commissioning in advance of 2024 opening

CALGARY, AB (December 14, 2022) - The PCL Construction | DIALOG + Stantec design-build team leading the Calgary Cancer Project has achieved substantial completion on the $1.4 billion facility. Located at the Foothills Medical Centre campus, the Calgary Cancer Centre will centralize cancer research, treatment and care for patients and their families in southern Alberta. The facility will include over 100 chemotherapy chairs and patient exam rooms, 160 inpatient unit beds and 12 radiation vaults, among other programs and spaces.

The extensive scope and integration of cancer care services at the CCC makes it one of the largest cancer centres in the world, focusing on prevention, early detection, precision medicine and psychosocial care. In this collaborative environment, health care providers will be inspired by a facility that supports research, innovation and education. More than 900 user consultation meetings, including clinical users and patient, family and volunteer representatives from Alberta provided input on the design of the facility, impacting how patients, providers and other users will interact with the centre.

“The project was only achievable thanks to a huge team effort, with a total of 14,000 people working on the project over the past five years, working nearly eight million hours”, said Toby Hendrie, project director, PCL Construction. “We are incredibly proud of both the facility itself and the commitment by all workers in achieving a particularly safe working environment during construction and throughout the pandemic.”

Symbolizing the type of care a patient can expect to receive at the new Calgary Cancer Centre the design features two curving L-shaped forms that come together at the centre of the facility, in an embrace that surrounds an all-season exterior garden as the “heart”. The garden will provide year-round access and views to nature and sunlight for patients and their families as they receive care and treatment. There are 13 linear accelerator vaults, including two magnetic resonance linear accelerators, among the first in Canada.

The PCL Construction | DIALOG + Stantec design-build team has been working on the Calgary Cancer Centre project since 2017. On any given day, approximately 900 construction and trades workers have been on site to keep the project moving forward on time and on budget.

Stantec and DIALOG were responsible for the architectural and interior design of the new Calgary Cancer Centre, as well as structural and electrical engineering. Stantec also provided civil and transportation engineering services.

Modern Niagara and Plan Group Canem Systems JV were responsible for the complex and extensive mechanical and electrical scopes which are critical to the success of health care projects.

The Calgary Cancer Centre is the largest government infrastructure project in the province to date. Alberta Health Services will now begin operational commissioning of the facility, installation of medical equipment, and other preparatory activities, in advance of welcoming patients in 2024.
