Edmonton, Alberta (March 9, 2023) PCL Construction and its partners were recognized by the Canadian Construction Association with an honourable mention at their 2023 Annual Conference in Tucson, Arizona in recognition of the innovative strategy and outcomes achieved delivering a new long-term care home in just 13 months.

Collaboration is the key to success on any project, but the Lakeridge Health Accelerated Build long-term care home, now known as Lakeridge Gardens, is a perfect example of what strong partnerships can achieve.

“Thank you to the Canadian Construction Association for recognizing our collaborative team with this honor. The successful outcome of Lakeridge Gardens reflects the culmination of efforts to optimize modular solutions coming together at the right time, with the right team including Lakeridge Health, Infrastructure Ontario, G Architects, Parkin Architects, all levels of the government, the workforce and all partners,” said Marc Pascoli, senior vice president and district manager of PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto). “While the means and methods utilized on this project certainly stand out, the culture and level of collaboration cultivated on this extremely fast-tracked project is something incredible. We couldn’t be more proud of what we built, and who we built it with and for.”

Lakeridge Gardens is the first project to be completed under Infrastructure Ontario’s Accelerated Build Pilot Program. Leveraging hospital-owned land and accelerated construction techniques to get shovels in the ground quickly were key to delivering this 320 bed, six story long-term care home in record time. Rapid procurement, design and schedule innovation, lean principles and a modular kit-of-parts approach were crucial to bringing Lakeridge Gardens to life years faster than a traditional build.

To provide insight into the project’s journey, PCL released a short documentary including rolling credits that recognize everyone involved who worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to provide long-term care residents with a modern, comfortable and safe place to call home and whose dedicated efforts were instrumental in bringing this project to life.

The team was also recently awarded the Toronto Construction Association’s Innovation of the Year Award for the outcomes achieved on the project. For more information on how the team built the home in months instead of years, check out this story on pcl.com.
