Toronto, ON (May 14, 2025) – PCL Construction is honored to take on the role of presenting sponsor for The Hospital for Sick Children’s (SickKids) 150th birthday, marking a century and a half of exceptional care at SickKids.
“PCL’s connection to SickKids runs deep and we are proud to take on the presenting role for SickKids 150th birthday,” says Monique Buckberger, vice president and district manager of PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto). “From constructing the new Patient Support Centre to leading the charge for SickKids GetLoud, PCL is committed to helping build a brighter future for SickKids.”
As the presenting sponsor, PCL is the proud host of two out of 150 balloon sculptures SickKids has commissioned as part of a public art initiative to commemorate their 150th Birthday. Standing at just over five feet five inches tall, each sculpture celebrates a significant milestone that has made SickKids the hospital it is today, from medical discoveries to strategic partnerships.
The first sculpture is displayed at PCL’s Greater Toronto Area office located in Oakville’s Winston Business Park area. Toronto is the largest market PCL works in and is home to many of PCL’s national clients and innovative projects. The sculpture at PCL Toronto’s office highlights a SickKids first: the world’s first blood type incompatible heart transplant performed in 1996. This surgery enabled infants to receive lifesaving heart transplants from donors with incompatible blood types.
The second sculpture is located at SickKids’ Patient Support Centre, a 22-story training, education and administration tower constructed by PCL and opened in 2023. Lauded as the first critical step in SickKids’ campus redevelopment journey and designed with connectivity and community in mind, the Patient Support Centre is home to the SickKids Learning Institute, which supports more than 1,000 world-class trainees, students and learners annually. The building also includes a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre for hands-on teaching in a bright, modern workspace for clinicians, professionals, management and support staff.
