DENVER, Colorado (December 15, 2020) – Five virtual events. Four weeks of donations. Three organizations. Two teams. One strong community. COVID-19 may have challenged PCL Construction’s annual Mile High United Way employee giving campaign, but even physically apart, the company stood united.

For more than two decades, PCL and Mile High United Way have partnered to fight for education, health and financial stability for those in the community of Denver. This year, PCL reached an employee participation of 75 percent during the giving campaign and a combined total contribution of $520,873.54 for all MHUW activities throughout 2020.

Unlike years past, practicing social distancing at these events was essential, so PCL found creative, virtual solutions to allow employees to safety and effectively participate.

A crowd-favorite event was the “Are You Smarter Than a Third Grader?” virtual game inspired by the hit television show, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? Hosted on Microsoft Teams, PCL contestants were asked questions based on third grade curriculum, to align with United Way’s goal to help all children read at a third-grade level.

The friendly competition didn’t stop there. PCL encouraged its employees to get outside with their families in the “Family Hiking Weekend Challenge” and if able, safely volunteer at longtime partner Florence Crittenton’s mobile food pantry.

The mobile distribution site for Food Bank of the Rockies supports teen moms who attend Florence Crittenton High School as well as community members in need. In total, PCL distributed a box of produce, frozen protein and assorted pantry items to more than 150 families.

The pandemic has kept us socially distant, but I believe it has truly brought our community closer.”
