Ottawa, Ontario (May 27, 2021) – PCL Construction is pleased to announce it has earned two General Contractors Association of Ottawa (GCAO) project awards for 2020.

The GCAO honoured Ottawa’s Government Conference Centre (GCC) Rehabilitation project with:

·         Best Project $15M in Value and Over.

·         The Don Chutter Meritorious Achievement Award, presented to the project which best demonstrates the contribution of general contracting to our quality of life.

The building originally opened in 1912 as a train station known as both the Grand Trunk Central Station and later Union Station. The building was re-purposed in 1967 as conference centre for the federal government. This rehabilitation project updated, and converted, the conference centre into Canada’s interim Senate while Parliament’s Centre Block is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

“The PCL Team works collaboratively and did an excellent job at executing the vision of the client and the architect,” says Mark Reid, who has been one of PCL’s Project Managers at GCC since the project began. “Walking through the building, after completion, is always a highlight.”

“Seeing all the detailed restoration of the existing plaster ceiling and also the custom perforated bronze panels depicting Canada’s landscapes – I always have to stop and look at what was accomplished every time I’m at the GCC.”

The rehabilitation project required the team to perform selective demolition in a busy downtown core next to the Rideau Canal; perform major structural updates to masonry, security steel, seismic upgrades and the complete removal/installation of new mechanical and electrical systems; interior fit-ups to new office and meeting spaces, rehabilitation of heritage fabrics and kitchens, in addition to landscaping and exterior lighting work.

Both awards are judged based on meeting safety and project management performance requirements, technical excellence and innovation, level of complexity and overall contribution to Ottawa. The GCC project was constructed by PCL for Public Works and Government Services Canada, with a final project budget of over $189 million.
