Mark Schachterle has over 30 years of construction industry experience, with expertise in preconstruction, cost estimating, value engineering and cost control. He joined PCL in 1999 and spent more than 22 years with the company before moving to a preconstruction manager role with a general contractor in Phoenix.
Now with PCL’s Phoenix Buildings office, Mark leads estimates, supports the prequalification process and reviews designs to ensure projects are cost effective. As construction risk manager, he oversees preconstruction efforts from trade partner solicitations to scope creation and bidding while mentoring new and experienced team members. He works closely with project teams, leadership, architects, engineers, owners and trade partners to ensure each project is fully resourced for success.
Mark finds the most reward in reducing risk, building long-term relationships and laying the foundation for projects that exceed expectations. He measures success by the readiness of the team and client for the next project and is driven by sharing knowledge to support the next generation of preconstruction professionals.
I have spent my entire career in estimating and preconstruction, working in multiple PCL districts across the country. Each experience deepened my understanding of project risk and collaboration, leading to my current role as construction risk manager. I oversee all preconstruction activities, update trade and internal cost data, lead bidding efforts, develop scopes, manage solicitations, and train new and existing team members.
My interest in construction began in high school, working on residential projects. I discovered a true passion for improving properties and bringing new structures to life. That foundation shaped my career in estimating and preconstruction, where I now focus on managing risk, leading projects from planning to bid, and empowering my team to achieve excellence on every project.
I am passionate about preconstruction because it allows me to identify and reduce risks while setting projects up for success. Collaborating closely with trade partners, architects, and owners, I enjoy building strong, long-term relationships. There is real satisfaction in seeing our teamwork deliver results that exceed expectations and create opportunities to work together on future projects.
Working at PCL has been incredibly rewarding because of the people and the culture of respect. I am inspired by talented colleagues who strive for excellence and collaboration every day. I also value how PCL engages trade partners with integrity, protecting sensitive information and building trust. That combination of teamwork and ethical practice makes each project meaningful and motivates me to give my best.
