The K3 Esterhazy Surface Fan Installation project was the first time PCL Industrial worked with Mosaic Canada ULC K Mines The expedited mine cooling project included the installation of four new intake and exhaust fans, which draw air from the surface and push it eight kilometers below ground into the mine. The urgency was due to added thermal loads in the mine that was adversely impacting their below ground operations. In addition to the new fans, a new burner building was constructed along with all associated piping and electrical to support the operation of the intake and exhaust fans. The project was a critical requirement for mine ventilation underground and had a substantial amount of schedule pressure during the execution phase. PCL Industrial Special Projects (ISP) assembled a strong project team, who planned and executed the project as if it were a turnaround. The project was finished in 41 days, which was ahead of schedule and without a single HSE incident.
PCL prides itself on being a unique solutions provider, as we strive to provide maximum value for each of our clients. From collaborating with our owner partners on front end engineering all the way through to supporting commissioning and startup, PCL offers turnkey project solutions led by experienced professionals. An example from this project is the electrical design. PCL’s ISP group offered cost savings solutions by providing detailed constructability reviews, which led to cable, and cable tray re-routes that significantly reduced field labor and allowed for improved operability of the fans. PCL also worked closely with the Engineer of Record to integrate the new electrical design with vendor supplied equipment and existing electrical equipment.
The project was viewed as a major success by all stakeholders. This success has paved the way for PCL’s ISP group and Mosaic to continue to partner on the execution of highly complex projects at the Mosaic K Mines sites.
