For over 60 years, OG&E has provided power to the Oklahoma City community from its Mustang coal-fired plant; however, the aging plant’s diminished operational efficiency and the desire for cleaner burning power generation signaled a time for change. OG&E decided to decommission its Mustang plant and build a new simple-cycle power plant utilizing cleaner natural gas.

PCL was awarded the construction contract for the new plant and installed seven Siemens Trent 60 gas turbines. With over 600,000 work hours on the project, all executed without a lost-time incident, PCL ensured the state-of-the-art design was implemented into the execution of the project. After completion, the new power plant provides continuous operation for up to six months, supplements power supply during peak power demand and provides primary power during weekend outages. In the event of an outage, the new units can provide power in less than 10 minutes and run independently to maximize operational efficiency.

The complex and difficult project execution did not go unnoticed, as PCL was awarded the Excellence in Construction National Eagle Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). PCL’s successful execution on the Mustang power project ensured Oklahoma City residents received cleaner, more efficient energy at a lower cost.
