The new and improved 110,000 square-foot baggage handling system at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport offers airport security with eight new Explosion Detection Machines, one mile of new conveyor allowing for the increased screening capacity, and a new Checked Bag Resolution Area while achieving maximum outbound baggage capacity for the airport’s average 51 million passengers annually. The optimization project allows the airport to meet the minimum-connect-time goal and increases reliability and security.

Extensive coordination and routing helped successfully tie the existing house steel and infrastructure into the updated handling system. Safety upgrades to the baggage screening area included a fire-rated perimeter and door, 30 screening monitors and a Transportation Security Administration breakroom. Our team worked in collaboration with the airport to simultaneously coordinate and phase around other airport projects, which helped maintain active airport operations with minimal impact to the airlines and passengers.

Upon completion, the new baggage optimization system allows airline personnel and travelers the peace of mind knowing their bags are safe and secure.
