Edmonton, Alberta (October 19, 2015) – The PCL family of companies is pleased to announce that it has received the Award of Excellence from the Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI) for the Wood Innovation and Design Centre in Prince George, BC. The awards were presented at an award luncheon on October 16, 2015, in conjunction with the institute’s annual National Design-Build Conference, held this year in Toronto.

Built by PCL Westcoast Constructors Inc. based in Vancouver, WIDC is the largest contemporary wood building in North America. The CDBI observed that its structure “showcases the still rare expertise in design and construction of large-scale wood buildings. Concrete is virtually eliminated above grade, and thus all the advantages of ‘dry construction’ accrue to the project.” For a close look at this innovative project, here are links to additional resources:

Todd Craigen, PCL vice president and district manager said that “the Wood Innovation and Design Centre project was truly a collaborative design effort. We worked closely with our design team partners and client, and with industry experts to create this award-winning building. We are very proud of the accolades the centre has received so far; however, the CDBI award means a lot to us as it specifically represents excellence in design-build innovation and execution. It is a validation of the value a design-build contractor brings to the design process, making sure we provide our clients exactly what they want.”

Sharing Design-Build Success

Another PCL project was showcased at the CDBI conference. During the conference program, PCL Toronto project manager Cory Raymond teamed up with Carol Phillips of Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Stepanka Elias of the University of Toronto Mississauga to share a case study on the award-winning University of Toronto Mississauga Innovation Complex from the three unique perspectives of those involved in the design-build process: the client, the design-builder, and the architect. The session gave insight into the need for adaptability, flexibility, and intense collaboration between all partners as the keys to a successful fasttrack, fixed budget, design-build delivery.
