Honolulu – Buildings Construction

HONOLULU, HI (November 12, 2014) – Nordic PCL Construction has been awarded the construction contract for Waiea, the first mixed-use development in Ward Village®, a vibrant, integrated master-planned community in the heart of Honolulu. Waiea, which in the Hawaiian language means “water of life,” is projected to create 2,700 construction jobs each year during construction and contribute $56 million in one-time tax revenues to the State of Hawai‘i, generating $2.2 million in new annual property taxes for the City and County of Honolulu.

“Nordic PCL values our partnership with the Howard Hughes Corporation on their first residential tower in Ward Village and the many subcontractors who make this development possible,” said Aaron Wiehe, Nordic PCL vice president and district manager. “Waiea will not only create construction jobs but will transform Ward Village into an exceptional community.”
Waiea will include 171 residences and approximately 8,200 square feet of retail space. The building  was designed by internationally recognized Vancouver-based architect James K.M. Cheng, in collaboration with the Honolulu-based firm, WCIT Architecture. Construction commenced in June 2014 and is scheduled for completion in late 2016. “One of the truly unique features will be the Diamond Head wall, resembling a cast fish net,” said Scott Viola, Nordic PCL construction manager.
“Ward Village is pleased to be working with Nordic PCL on Waiea and will be working with as many local subcontractors as possible on this development,” said David Striph, senior vice president of Hawai‘i for the Howard Hughes Corporation. “In addition to bringing this thoughtful development to Ward Village, Waiea will contribute substantial economic benefits to Honolulu and the State of Hawai‘i.”

Over the next decade, Ward Village will transform 60 acres in Kaka‘ako into a truly integrated community, offering unique retail experiences and exceptional residences set among dynamic public open spaces and walkable streets. Environmental stewardship is forefront in the Ward Village Master Plan, which has received LEED® for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) Platinum Certification.
