Raleigh, NC (October 24, 2017) – PCL Construction in
conjunction with our joint venture partner, Walsh Construction Co., is honored to
receive the American Segmental Bridge Institute’s (ASBI) Award of Excellence
for the Pearl Harbor Memorial (Q) Bridge in New Haven, Connecticut.
The award recognizes bridges that exemplify concrete
segmental bridge design and construction excellence. The battleship-inspired
bridge, crossing over the main harbor of the Quinnipiac River, is the first
extradosed, prestressed concrete bridge built in the United States and only the
third in North America. Extradosed bridges are a hybrid of conventional
concrete segmental and cable-stayed bridges, and features that define the
bridge include flat stay-cable angles smaller than 20 degrees and shorter cable
The Pearl Harbor Memorial (Q) Bridge was previously awarded
the Top Bridges #2 ranking by Roads and Bridges magazine in 2013 and the Arthur
Gruhn Excellence in Construction Award in the Large Project category by the
Connecticut Department of Transportation.
Projects were judged based
on the following criteria: innovation of design and/or construction, rapid
construction, aesthetics and/or harmony with environment, cost competitiveness,
and minimization of construction impact on the traveling public.
