Vancouver, BC (October 13, 2017) – The PCL family of companies is pleased to announce that PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. has received an Award of Excellence from the Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI) for the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre in Kelowna, British Columbia. The facility is LEED® Gold certified.

PCL teamed with Plenary Health, HDR | CEI Architecture Associates, and geotechnical engineers Geopacific Consultants, along with other partners, to deliver the Interior Heart and Surgical Centre under a design-build agreement.

Innovations at the Heart of the Win

Geotechnical engineers on the project team determined that the weight of the building previously occupying the site could be considered preload, and this enabled the team to eliminate the requirement to preload the building site. The proposed method eliminated the cost of transporting and removing preload material, and saved approximately six months of schedule time.

Seven months before service commencement, PCL held a full-day workshop for all key stakeholders that dispelled any ambiguity about what was required from each party to prove compliance requirements. A dedicated project manager was then assigned to each milestone—commissioning, occupancy, substantial performance, user training, and LEED.

“Having our work recognized, and winning this award helps reinforce PCL’s reputation as a leader in Design-Build project delivery” said Sean Hamelin, BC Region vice president and district manager. “It is proof of our dedication to innovation and excellence.”

The awards were presented at an award luncheon on October 13, 2017, in conjunction with the institute’s annual National Design-Build Conference, held this year in Calgary.
