Edmonton, Alberta (October 14, 2016) – The PCL family of companies is pleased to announce that it has received two prestigious Awards of Excellence from the Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI).
Communications Security Establishment Canada
(CSEC) Long-Term Accommodation project.

Surrey Pretrial Service Centre Expansion.

PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Ottawa) was recognized for excellence in the Special Uses category for the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) Long-Term Accommodation project. The design of the facility incorporated not only the physical building but also all the IT networks and infrastructure. A sustainable design feature is the cladding, which is uniquely made up of thin wood veneer cut from old growth timber salvaged from the bottom of Georgian Bay. PCL teamed with Plenary Group and WZMH Architects to complete the CSEC project under a public-private partnership (P3) delivery model.

PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. (BC Region) received the Institutional category award for the Surrey Pretrial Service Centre Expansion. The expansion more than doubled capacity, making the building the largest correctional facility in British Columbia. A major component of the renovation portion was the gradual changeover to a new, state-of-the-art electronic security control system. To improve the living and working environment and reduce costs over time, PCL found an innovative way to introduce abundant natural light into a type of facility that by its nature contains minimal glazing. PCL teamed with Forum Equity Partners and DGBK Architects to deliver the Surrey Pretrial Service Centre as a P3 design-build-finance-maintain project.

Both buildings achieved LEED Gold certification. The awards were presented at an award luncheon on October 14, 2016, in conjunction with the institute’s annual National Design-Build Conference, held this year in Winnipeg.
