OTTAWA, Ontario (March 24, 2017) – PCL Constructors Canada Inc. along with United Way Ottawa, and in partnership with Ottawa Community Housing Corporation and Ottawa Community Housing Foundation are pleased to announce the official opening of a new kitchen within the Winthrop Community Centre.

“This is the third PCL Hard Hat Heroes funded project that has allowed our employees to truly see what an impact their donations are making towards smaller or needy communities. These communities are often overlooked for funding and do not have the time or manpower to do fundraisers in order to upgrade or change what is needed to make a true difference,” said Kevin Skinner, Vice-President & District Manager, PCL. “This campaign means much more because the dollars contributed are strictly dedicated by PCL employees through their annual charitable campaign contributions. We are very proud of our commitment.”

In the Winthrop Court area, 61% of residents are on Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or receive a pension and 65% of households are single-parent led households. The renovation and expansion of the Winthrop Court Community Kitchen has increased accessibility and usability of the space. The size of the kitchen now allows for better quality programs, further homework club space for children and two very successful cooking programs per week.

Emily Parent, senior accounting manager for PCL, said, “As a result of the dedicated energy and enthusiasm of our PCL employees, we are able to recognize that all of our neighbours benefit from living in healthier, stronger communities, and we are so happy to be able to bring people and resources together by providing financial support.” Parent along with Bryce Howchin, project manager for PCL, were instrumental in bringing this joint initiative to fruition.

"PCL Constructors Inc. and its employees continue to show their commitment to the communities they work in through their dedication to the Hard Hat Heroes Fund," said Carole Gagnon, Vice President of Resource Development at United Way Ottawa. "Infrastructure projects like the newly renovated Winthrop Kitchen are making a tangible difference in the lives of some of our city's most vulnerable people. We're grateful to PCL for demonstrating such incredible leadership in the Ottawa community."
