San Diego – Buildings Construction

San Diego, CA (May 24, 2017) – Turner Construction Company and PCL Construction Services, Inc. in San Diego broke ground yesterday on the first phase of the Federal Inspection Station Relocation and Expansion (FIS) project at San Diego International Airport (SAN).

The project, a 50/50 joint venture partnership between Turner and PCL, includes the full design-build of the new FIS facility at SAN’s Terminal 2 West. The new facility will house Customs and Border Protection as well as other international passenger arrival services. Phase one includes full completion and activation of the FIS addition, a technology hall for global entry passengers, baggage-handling modifications, and associated airline relocations. Phase two requires completion of an additional dual gatehouse, third-floor sterile corridor and associated holding rooms, and airline office relocations.

The expansion comes as a result of faster than expected growth of international passengers traveling through the airport. In 2016, the airport welcomed more than 300,000 international arriving passengers, a number that is expected to grow to 400,000 passengers by 2024.

The first phase will conclude in June 2018, with phase two complete in June 2019.
