Edmonton, AB (August 15, 2017) – The PCL family of companies and Grocon PCL Joint Venture are pleased to announce that the recently completed Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) has been awarded a Master Builders Excellence in Construction Award for Commercial Buildings over $80 million.

The $1 billion VCCC is located in Melbourne’s prestigious biomedical precinct in Parkville and was undertaken as a design-build joint venture with Melbourne-based Grocon. The Grocon PCL Joint Venture belongs to the Plenary Health consortium, which is contracted to design, build, finance, and maintain the facility for 25 years under a public-private partnership (P3) with the Victorian Government.

“The outcome of this successful building partnership is a state-of-the-art health-care facility that will establish the VCCC as an industry leader in cancer research, treatment, care, and education. PCL is proud to deliver Australia’s first comprehensive cancer centre both on time and on budget,” said Dave Filipchuk, president and chief executive officer of PCL Construction.

The 13-storey VCCC brings together 10 world-leading cancer organizations and is home to 160 overnight inpatient beds, 110 same-day beds, a 42-bed intensive care unit, a dedicated clinical trials unit, eight operating theatres, nine radiation therapy bunkers, education and training facilities, and more than 20,000 square feet of dedicated research space for up to 1,200 researchers. Construction on the VCCC commenced in 2011 and was completed on time in 2016, with more than 1,500 builders, architects, engineers, fabricators, and technicians working at the peak of construction to realize the client’s vision.

The PCL family of companies have completed more than $6 billion in P3 projects in the last decade alone, most of it health-care related.
