BCIT Canada Way Infrastructure Renewal

Project Overview

This renewal project establishes a new BC Hydro connection on the north half of BCIT’s Burnaby campus. Work included replacing the existing receiving power station and associated unit substation and feeders to improve the resiliency of the electrical infrastructure throughout the north campus. In addition to the electrical upgrades, many of the existing water main, gas, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer utilities were replaced. Significant landscaping improvements were also made along English Street to align with the BCIT Campus Plan.

In 2015, PCL replaced the south campus receiving station — the Goard Way project. Based on the lessons learned, PCL created an integrated design team early in the process to develop the design and scope of work packages, budget, and schedule. The integrated design team included people from BCIT, RF Binnie, PCL, and Stantec. Early involvement allowed PCL to review drawings and specifications for constructability and to provide recommendations, and to complete the project 11.5 months earlier than scheduled.

The work was phased to minimize the impact on the campus, which remained operational during the upgrade.

The project received the prestigious Envision Gold award in 2019 for sustainable infrastructure.
