With a seating capacity of 18,500, the Canadian Tire Centre (CTC) is the largest enclosed sports and entertainment facility in the region, and home to the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club. The CTC features 148 executive suites on three levels, with the first 56 suites just 16 rows from the ice surface. The facility also has three full service restaurants, an 800-seat banquet hall, meeting rooms, a fitness club, and a sports medicine clinic, as well as office and retail space. The building itself is approximately 630,000 square feet situated on a 98-acre subdivision. Forty-eight acres of this were developed to provide parking spaces for more than 6,500 cars. As part of the services provided to the client, extensive civil infrastructure was completed both above and below grade to allow access and provide services to the new facility.
PCL began working collaboratively with those who became the ultimate founders of the Ottawa Senators hockey club years before an NHL franchise was granted. Beginning with the team’s franchise pursuit presentations and continuing through the initial development stages of the program, PCL assisted the owner’s team with construction planning and costing of the complex facility and its associated civil infrastructure—always looking to reduce costs without reducing the quality of the end product. This long-term commitment during the initial franchise pursuit, through the arranging of financing, on to design development, and finally to the construction stage of the program provided the organization with a trusted partner. PCL followed this preconstruction commitment with stellar on-site execution that saw the facility turned over, and collecting revenue, a full six months ahead of the original twenty-four-month schedule.
