The island of Oahu is the third-largest in the Hawaiian
chain. Its name can be translated as the “gathering place,” which is fitting
since the majority of Hawaii’s population resides there and it serves as the
top cultural, financial, and tourist destination on the islands. Oahu’s
, has been named one of America’s 50 Best Places to Live and
among US cities ranks fourth for the tallest skyscrapers.

For most of its existence, Oahu has relied heavily on
Honolulu being the focal point of the island, particularly the city’s Waikiki
district. Located on the south shore of Honolulu, this beachfront neighborhood
is home to Oahu’s main hotel and resort area along with Kalakaua Avenue, where
you’ll find world-class shopping, dining, entertainment, and other activities.
With all of the growth Oahu has already seen, especially at Waikiki,
the highway system from the mauka (inner) to the makai (outer, or ocean facing)
sides of the island has limited potential for increased roadways. A continuing
influx of visitors each year and constant population growth has led to a desire
among consumers and Oahu locals to stay closer to home, and developers are
recognizing the need to think smaller, not larger. Nordic PCL Construction is
helping answer the needs of locals, consumers, and developers alike by building
defined, more intimate gathering places for families, tourists, and locals to
come together to relax, unwind, and enjoy local food and entertainment.
In spring of 2017, Nordic PCL completed the Mitsuwa
Marketplace, an international shopping center located in the heart of Waikiki. Mitsuwa
is a Japanese-American chain that aims to “transport you to the heart of Japan”
with food, décor, and atmosphere one would find in modern-day Japan. While
visiting the marketplace, something may catch one’s eye: families, couples, and
friends relaxing, playing games, and enjoying the space while people-watching
on Kuhio Road.
Ka Makana Ali’i, the new ground-up regional mall in west
Oahu, is a welcome site to local residents. It features more than 100 shops and
restaurants, a state-of-the-art Consolidated Theater, and a six-story hotel.
Creating areas for locals to stay closer to home enables them to live, work,
shop, and play in one location without the need to travel across the island.
Spaces like Mitsuwa Marketplace, with its musical acts and
street-food-inspired restaurants, and Ka Makana Ali’I, with its farmers’
markets and center-court music stage, bring people together and allow the
community of Waikiki and others alike to have the world at their fingertips.
