The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is Canada’s
largest cardiovascular health center,
dedicated to
understanding, treating, and preventing heart disease. To help meet the
demands of a growing and changing patient population,
UOHI
Cardiac Life Support Services partnered with PCL to renovate the existing space
and build a new 191,000-square-foot, four-story building.
Parts of the UOHI remained open and operational during
construction. PCL had to balance when and where refurbishment and demolition
could take place in this dynamic environment. The renovation of 67,000 square
feet included installation of a larger, centralized diagnostic imaging center,
and redesign and expansion of the main lobby to improve visitor access. An
additional new four-story building will house support services such as
operating rooms, electrophysiology labs, catheterization labs, and intensive
care.
“PCL has done a lot of healthcare builds,” says Brian
Greaves, PCL superintendent, “and we work hard to deliver projects like this no
matter the size or complexity. It’s an amazing project to be a part of because
the redevelopment will help the institute continue to give patients
state-of-the-art, world-renowned care.”
When completed in early 2020, the facility will support the advanced and rapidly changing
technologies required to better care for patients who have complex medical
needs than was possible in the past.
