Using the construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) procurement method, this accelerated bridge construction (ABC) project replaced the existing 43 north and south bridges that carry I-91 over US Route 5 in Hartford, Vermont. The I-91 north and south bridges were replaced using the innovative ABC technique of a lateral bridge slide. Construction work for a significant portion of the new bridge abutments occurred while traffic was maintained on I-91 and US 5. New superstructures and approach slabs were constructed adjacent to the existing structures. During the course of two weekends, the existing bridges were removed and the new bridge was successfully slid into place.
There are high traffic volumes on US 5, as well as on I-91 and the bridge site; therefore, a detailed plan for maintenance of traffic minimized traffic impacts and eliminated lengthy detours. During the design phase, PCL incorporated additional features to accommodate pedestrians. The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), as the Engineer of Record, awarded this CM/GC contract to PCL based on our ability to successfully collaborate on the management and development of plans, construction means and methods, and overall project development. At the end of the project, VTrans released the following survey results provided by local residents: 100% of the respondents were satisfied with how the new bridges turned out, and 99% liked how the project was delivered, using ABC methods.
