Mile High United Way Headquarters

Project Overview

Built in the historic Five Points-Curtis Park neighborhood just outside of downtown Denver, the Mile High United Way Headquarters serves as a community hub, bringing together nonprofit groups and government agencies to serve the residents of Denver. The Five Points-Curtis Park neighborhood is experiencing a significant revitalization thanks to projects like Mile High United Way’s. PCL and design partner Davis Partnership Architects worked together to achieve a building suited for the community outreach initiatives of Mile High United Way, while seamlessly integrating into the historic neighborhood. The new headquarters provides office space for 150 employees and is built according to LEED certified requirements. The building’s exterior walls were constructed with a combination of zinc metal panels, blue curtain wall, and masonry to complement the Five Points-Curtis Park neighborhood.

Original concept designs provided to Mile High United Way called for a surface parking lot; however, once the design was submitted to the Curtis Park Neighborhood Association for review, both Mile High United Way and the PCL/Davis Partnership team discovered that the association was against surface parking. PCL undertook the challenge of introducing underground parking to the project while maintaining the original schedule.

The added scope of underground parking meant that conventional cast-in-place concrete for the foundation walls became a schedule constraint, so other options were explored in order to maintain schedule and cost. PCL indentified that a foundation wall system composed of shotcrete walls with Xypex could be completed within a week and a half, five weeks sooner than if conventional cast-in-place concrete had been used. PCL’s foundation wall system solution allowed the project to remain within budget and on schedule, despite the addition of underground parking to the project scope.
