The North Parking Facility Extension at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport consists of a four-level extension at the north end of the existing airport parking facility. (PCL completed another four-level parking extension five years previously.) At 322,667 square feet, the extension comprises one level at grade and three elevated, posttensioned, cast-in-place concrete levels, and contains 850 parking stalls.
The work was completed in three phases. Phases 1 and 2 consisted of the construction of the northwest and northeast sections, respectively. Phase 3 entailed the installation of a structural steel roof addition of 314,620 square feet, covering Level 4 of the entire parking structure (i.e., the existing parkade plus the new extension), complete with roofing membrane, and sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
The existing parking garage was fully operational while the new extension was under way. Traffic management is always a challenge at an airport, owing to the large volume of traffic. PCL established an access route off the airport expressway during the preconstruction process and integrated this into the construction plan, enabling the diversion of construction traffic from regular airport traffic.
